Camp Summary
The Kenya Experience have teamed up with Brazilian athlete and running coach, Ademir Paulino, to offer a tailored running camp exclusive to Brazilian athletes – ‘Ademir Paulino Assessoria Esportiva Kenya Experience Camp’ and in July 2019 we hosted the first edition of this camp.
Ademir is an elite triathlete from Brazil who attended our August 2017 Kenya Experience Original camp to help improve his won running. He left the camp with new knowledge for how to optimise his running performance and an inspiration garnered from Kenya’s great runners and the atmosphere in Iten. Ademir enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to bring his team back for a private camp in 2019. 23 enthusiastic runners joined us and Ademir to train alongside champion Kenyan athletes as well as our own expert coaches and run guides.
We kicked off by getting to know the team and introducing them to our coaches and staff and it wasn’t long before we were out on the trails for our first group run in Kenya. The standard in the group was varied but that was no issue for our run guides who ensured everyone had someone to run with and push them (or hold them back!) at the right level.
We built the training up slowly with relaxed morning miles as we acclimatised to the 2400m altitude here in Iten and it wasn’t long before we were ready to take on our first hard workout of the camp. Coach Hugo prescribed a tempo based interval session and we headed to the famed Kamariny Track which perches on the edge of The Great Rift Valley. Kamariny track is the famous training ground of some of the worlds greatest athletes, including David Rudisha, Mary Keitany and Wilson Kipsang, but was closed for refurbishment in recent years. It was incredible to see the old track once again bustling with local athletes hard at work. We trained alongside a friendly group of local Kenyan runners under the guidance of KE coaches Hugo and Collins who were on hand to offer support and advice.
Training highlights included a session on running drills with Ademir, Hugo and Collins at the all weather track, interval sessions at Kamariny alongside local Kenyan athletes, gym sessions of core stability and strength training in HATC gym and of course the famous Iten fartlek on Thursday morning.
Between training sessions it was over to Kenya Experience tour guides Songok & Enock who took the group to visit some of the famous places of the Iten running scene. This included a tour of St Patrick’s High School, the most successful athletics school in the world, having produced more world and Olympic champions than many nations. Meeting the local teachers and coaches as well as seeing some of the incredible trophies the students have brought home over the years is always inspiring and the school records book is something to behold, it is quite simply mind boggling. Plus of course, meeting the legendary coach, Brother Colm O’Connell was a particular highlight of the trip.
We also visited a local primary school which was a humbling and inspiring experience for the group and something they will remember for the rest of their lives. They saw the role that education plays in Iten as well as how the young children are inspired by the local champion runners. Although the running industry has been a primary driver of economic and social change in Iten the majority of the local population are still liviing in challenging conditions and attendance at primary school is by no means certain for young people.
All in all, it was an inspiring visit and perhaps we were interacting with the running stars of the future…

Form Reviews
“The camp was full of memorable moments: the fartlek with the kenyans and fluorspar hill were memorable, the visit to the GEF and the families they support was such a touching experience, the morning runs learning from the pacers and enjoying the beautiful sceneries, Singore Forest, meeting Kip Keino and Brother Colm, so many moments to be remembered.”

“KE has been the most complete experience I have ever had because it is not only about running. It is an experience that approaches many aspects of the Kenya lifestyle. It includes how people live, how Kenyans face the running, how is the local food, the lifestyle and much more. I am in ecstasy about how KE is concerned about every detail to offer the best moments to us! To be for 2 weeks with the best runners of the world, the coaches, the pacemakers and all the team that works at the camp is a privilege to me.”
– Renata Alchorne (KE feedback form – June 2019)
“My choice to return back to the Kenya Experience and be looked after so well by Willy Songok was the best decision. And I again had a rewarding and challenging time in Iten.”
“Having Adharanand Finn along was an incredible bonus. His own unique stories and generous ability to share and include everyone gave me an insight I never would have had other wise.”
– Meghann Stewart (KE feedback form – June 2019)

Life changing experience
Exceeded my expectations!
Exceeded my expectations. Our group was taken care of by the amazing staff, our coach Hugo was very professional and plenty of time were given on seminars to discuss training of Kenyan runners and other training philosophies. We were able to meet with and chat with former Olympic and World champion runners in informal settings. The trip also let us meet local Kenyan families who welcomed us inte their homes. A great experience which gave me better knowledge about training and tons of inspiration to keep improving!
